The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has dismissed a petition filed by Ramkumar, a DMK area secretary, seeking to quash a criminal case registered by the Crime Branch police over alleged encroachment of Srirangam Ranganathar Temple land.
According to the case details cited in court, the police had booked the matter alleging that land belonging to the temple—valued at around Rs 50 crore—was grabbed using forged documents.
In his petition, Ramkumar said he had purchased the land in a specified survey number for Rs 2.90 crore from a retired judge from Puducherry and the judge’s family. He claimed the registration was done only after a field inspection by the Srirangam Sub-Registrar and argued there were no documents to prove the land belonged to the temple.
He also contended that the case was filed with political motives and sought its cancellation. Justice R. Vijayakumar heard the matter.
However, as the petitioner’s side informed the court that the plea was being withdrawn, the judge dismissed it. The court added that after the police file a final report before the competent lower court, the petitioner may approach the High Court against it.
