Private bus owners in Tamil Nadu have postponed a one-day statewide strike that was announced for September 30, after the state government assured them that their demands would be reviewed.
The Tamil Nadu Private Bus Owners Federation had earlier said the sector was under strain as bus fares had not been revised for the past eight years. It also cited the impact of the free travel scheme for women, warning that operations could become unviable.
Federation president K. Thangaraj had announced the strike to press for a fare hike. However, following the government’s assurance, the planned stoppage has now been put on hold.
In a statement issued on September 29, Thangaraj said the state’s Revenue Minister and Transport Minister contacted the association and confirmed that key demands would be considered. He also thanked the media for helping convey the federation’s concerns to the public.
