Chief Minister Vijay on Tuesday launched the ‘Thaymaman Gold Ring’ scheme at the Madurai Government Hospital, where he presented gold rings to newborns delivered at the facility.
During his visit to the maternity ward, the Chief Minister met and congratulated mothers who had recently delivered. He personally placed gold rings on 10 infants in the ward and later distributed rings to the babies of 25 more women gathered in an auditorium.
The first three rings were presented to newborns from three faiths—Hindu, Muslim and Christian—belonging to Archana Devi, Rabeela Beevi and Stella Mary, officials said.
In a moment noted by those present, when milk spilled from a baby’s mouth while a ring was being placed, Vijay asked for tissue paper and handed it to the mother. He also held and kissed some infants, posed for photographs, signed on a few babies’ clothes on request, and even announced names for two newborns at the mothers’ request.
Health Secretary Tharesh Ahmed welcomed the Chief Minister, while Chief Secretary Saikumar presided. Ministers Anand, Nirmalkumar and Vishwanathan, Collector Nishanth Krishna and MPs Manickam Tagore and Venkatesan were among those who attended the event.
