Chennai: In the case alleging a ₹100-crore fraud linked to obtaining approvals for private schools, accused Arasakumar has secured conditional bail after investigators failed to file the final report within the stipulated 90 days.
Police had registered a case against Arasakumar, described as the president of a private schools association, and arrested him along with the association’s treasurer Muthukumar. As part of the probe, raids were also conducted at locations linked to former DMK minister Mahesh, according to the report.
The Crime Branch searched premises in Saligramam, Kodambakkam, Soolaimedu, Poonamallee and Navalur in Chennai, including houses linked to the accused, their relatives and alleged aides. Investigators seized a laptop and 44 documents, including property papers, bank details, cheques and digital records.
The prosecution sought additional time, citing the need for further searches to gather evidence. However, Special Court Judge L.S. Sathiyamoorthy granted bail after noting that the investigation agency had not filed its final report within 90 days; Arasakumar had been in custody beyond 92 days.
Earlier, the Madras High Court had quashed the Goondas Act detention order against Arasakumar, reportedly accepting the argument that his petition challenging the detention was taken up only after a 13-day delay. With over 100 complainants said to have approached authorities, questions have been raised over whether lapses by officials weakened the case, causing disappointment among complainants.
