Thousands of supporters gathered in Dharapuram on Tuesday, hoping to see Chief Minister Vijay, who is scheduled to campaign for the by-election in the town.
Vijay is campaigning in support of TAVEK candidate Sathyabama. Organisers had reportedly allowed only 5,000 people to attend the public meeting.
However, the venue was already packed well before the Chief Minister’s arrival, with many more supporters waiting outside. Film songs featuring Vijay were played to keep the crowd energised, as supporters whistled and raised slogans.
Police denied entry to those without permission, leading to arguments at the gates and a tense atmosphere in the area, according to reports from the spot.
