New Delhi: In the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, Sandeep Mistry, described as a close aide of fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi, has been deported to India from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The PNB scam, involving alleged fraud of ₹14,357 crore, came to light in 2018. Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, named as key accused, fled abroad, following which the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) pursued steps to bring those involved back to India.
Investigators believe Mistry had a role in routing funds through bank accounts of shell companies based in the UAE. The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate filed a chargesheet against him in July this year, and a Red Corner Notice was also issued.
UAE authorities recently detained Mistry while he was in hiding. He was deported on Monday and brought to Mumbai, where CBI officials arrested him at the airport and sent him to judicial custody. The agency is expected to move court seeking his custodial interrogation.
