The Supreme Court has agreed to take up a petition seeking the suspension of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, and has directed that the matter be listed for hearing next week.
According to the report, the petition arises from the nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls initiated under the CEC’s leadership. The exercise began in Bihar and has since been completed in several states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, with large numbers of names removed on grounds such as duplicate entries, deceased voters, permanent address changes and alleged fake voters. The SIR process is currently underway in Delhi.
The plea, filed by Bihar resident Rakesh Kumar Singh, alleges that the CEC implemented the SIR unilaterally. It claims the other two Election Commissioners objected and that the exercise proceeded without their consent.
The petitioner argues this amounts to abuse of authority, stating that the Election Commission is expected to function through collective decision-making. The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Suryakant has admitted the petition and ordered it to be listed next week.
