Chennai: Chief Minister Vijay has appealed to the people of Tamil Nadu to choose khadi clothing and support weavers and artisans, calling it a way to honour skill, labour and local production.

In a statement ahead of October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Chief Minister said the day recalls India’s freedom struggle and values such as simplicity, self-reliance, dignity of labour and inclusive humanism. He noted that Gandhi, through the spinning wheel, taught economic freedom and self-sufficiency to every Indian.

Vijay said purchasing a khadi garment is an acknowledgement of a weaver’s craftsmanship, while buying village products is a mark of respect for the work of artisans. Using locally made goods, he added, encourages the productive capacity of the land.

He pointed out that global demand is rising for eco-friendly clothing made from natural fibres. He said the Tamil Nadu Khadi and Village Industries Board is improving access to khadi and village industry products by blending tradition with modern designs and expanding availability through e-commerce platforms.

The Chief Minister also highlighted that khadi outlets across the state provide khadi cotton, polyester and silk varieties at a 30% discount throughout the year. He urged students, government and private employees, youth and all residents to make use of the offer and purchase khadi and village products to bring renewed hope to spinners, weavers and artisans.
