Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised Captain Sumit Machar, an Indian pilot working with Flydubai, calling him a hero for his actions during a mid-air crisis.
According to reports, the incident occurred on a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, where the co-pilot allegedly stabbed Machar with a knife and attempted to hijack the aircraft. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Machar is said to have fought through the situation and brought the aircraft under control, helping protect 174 passengers.
As the captain stabilised the flight, crew members reportedly opened the cockpit door and restrained the attacking co-pilot. Machar, a Mumbai native who completed his pilot training in Gurugram, has been receiving widespread praise for his composure and courage.
The report said Machar had earlier worked with SpiceJet for about a decade until 2023 and that his condition is now stable. A senior pilot who trained him also spoke positively about his conduct and professionalism, while noting that Machar’s brother is also a pilot working at Flydubai.
In his message, Modi said Machar’s bravery helped prevent a major tragedy and saved many lives, adding that the nation is proud of him and praying for his speedy recovery and good health.
