Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the “heroes” who helped prevent a major disaster involving a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
According to Netanyahu’s statement, as the aircraft neared Israel, one pilot allegedly attacked another with a knife and was suspected of attempting to crash the plane with passengers on board. He said the quick thinking and bravery of those involved saved many lives.
A passenger reportedly told Netanyahu that the injured pilot still helped ensure a safe landing. The flight diverted to Saudi Arabia, where the aircraft landed safely.
Reports said the attacker was an Omani pilot, while the injured pilot was identified as an Indian national, Smith Machar. Saudi authorities arrested the suspect and are questioning him.
Following the incident, Netanyahu held consultations with officials including Defence Minister Katz. Israel said the situation was under control and steps were being taken to bring Israeli citizens back safely.
