Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke by phone with Indian pilot Captain Smith Machar, who was stabbed during an onboard attack but continued to act decisively to protect passengers. Modi enquired about his health and praised his courage and presence of mind.
According to the report, Machar helped foil what was described as a major terror plan involving a UAE-owned aircraft. He is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Abu Dhabi after sustaining serious injuries.
During the call, Machar briefed the Prime Minister on what unfolded during the mid-air emergency and spoke about what gave him strength at the time. Modi told him that prayers were being offered across the country for his recovery and said his actions had brought pride to “140 crore” Indians.
A video of the conversation was released, in which Modi said Machar put passengers’ lives above his own despite being badly hurt. Machar, speaking emotionally, said he drew courage by reciting the Hanuman Chalisa and expressed confidence that he would recover fully and return in good health.
