Chennai Police on Thursday said they have received five fresh pieces of information through a WhatsApp number announced for complaints related to the Veeramani sexual assault case.
Veeramani (85), a granite business owner, was arrested under the POCSO Act on allegations of sexually assaulting minors. Two others — Shanti (61) and Mahendra Simhan (63) — were also arrested for allegedly aiding the offence.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Tamil Nadu government had earlier asked victims and others with evidence to contact the WhatsApp number 9345319676. Police said people have been sending complaints along with supporting material to the number.
Police added that Veeramani, Shanti and Mahendra Simhan have been detained under the Goondas Act. Investigators are also examining suspicious transactions linked to Veeramani, and four cases have so far been registered under various legal provisions.
