Chief Minister Vijay on Wednesday launched the expanded free travel scheme for women in government buses, inaugurating the initiative on a Chennai–Kanchipuram service.

The launch event began at the Koyambedu bus terminus in Chennai, where the Chief Minister paid floral tribute to a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi before formally rolling out the programme.

After boarding the bus, he interacted with women passengers and issued them zero-fare tickets, extending greetings as the service departed.

Under the expanded plan, women can travel free of cost on 12,692 buses, including metropolitan and city services such as Express, LSS and Deluxe, suburban ordinary buses, and ordinary hill-route buses operating beyond 40 km.

The scheme is expected to benefit about 84.32 lakh women passengers daily, improving access to public transport for women across Tamil Nadu.
