Chennai: Annamalai, head of the organisation “We The Leaders”, urged his supporters to be ready for the upcoming local body elections.

Speaking after presenting the Kamarajar Award to 11 women achievers from different fields, he said the group has been working for social change without expecting anything in return. He claimed that in the last two months the organisation cleared 600 tonnes of garbage across Tamil Nadu, planted 12.70 lakh saplings, and helped restore the Thennaaru river that had gone missing in Karaikudi.

Citing crime data, Annamalai said 26,145 crimes against women were registered in Tamil Nadu over the past five years, including 21,397 POCSO cases, averaging 14 such crimes a day. He announced that the organisation will conduct programmes related to women’s safety throughout October.

He also said it was commendable that eight women have been included in the Tamil Nadu cabinet for the first time, and added that his side would ensure equal representation for women in the cabinet when it comes to power.

Calling for political preparedness, he said the organisation needs 12,525 panchayat presidents to bring the change it seeks. He urged supporters to teach women about politics, saying it would help the group prepare for future Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

The event was attended by the organisation’s general secretary Karu Nagarajan and media wing general secretary Aspire Swaminathan, among others.
