Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said the new criminal law, referred to as BNS, will ensure that cases are concluded within three years once it is fully implemented.
Speaking in Bhopal after inaugurating an exhibition on the new criminal laws, Shah said the timeline would cover the entire process—from the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) to proceedings up to the Supreme Court.
He also referred to two events held in Bhopal on the day, including a livestock rearers’ conference. Shah said the large participation of livestock farmers could be a good opportunity for a forthcoming “milk revolution” in Madhya Pradesh.
Shah criticised the colonial-era laws, saying they were framed to protect British rule. He said the new criminal laws belong to the people of India and are rooted in justice rather than punishment, with penalties intended mainly to deter crime.
According to him, once fully operational, India’s criminal justice system will become one of the most modern systems.
