Chennai Police have taken disciplinary action against three personnel in two separate cases involving bribery and alleged extortion. Commissioner Amalraj issued the orders on Friday.
In the first case, Sivagangai native Raja, who works at a bakery in Tiruppur, had reported his two-wheeler stolen on September 11. During a police operation in Triplicane on September 22, a special team from North Beach police station failed to nab a suspect who fled, but the two-wheeler he had been riding was seized.
Checks showed the vehicle belonged to Raja. Police then called him to Chennai and allegedly demanded money to release the bike, collecting Rs 10,000 through the GPay app. Raja later complained to the Vigilance wing at the Commissioner’s office, and an inquiry confirmed the bribe.
Following this, Sub-Inspector Sivaraj (30) and constable Vivek (35) were suspended. Separately, Puzhal police station SI Mareeswaran (41) was dismissed after a departmental inquiry found allegations of running an extortion drive and misconduct to be true; he had earlier faced a bribery complaint and suspension while serving at Anna Nagar police station.
