Chennai: The TVK-led government has allotted space in its alliance to the Congress, VCK and the Indian Union Muslim League. With MDMK MLAs leaning towards the DMK, the party is currently extending only outside support to the TVK administration.
Parties that earlier formed part of the DMK front have now come together under TVK to form what is being described as a secular, social justice-oriented victory alliance. The leadership is keen to further strengthen this bloc ahead of the local body elections scheduled for January next year.
As part of efforts to widen support in the Assembly, TVK is said to have held discreet talks to bring the PMK into the alliance. In this context, reports circulated that Chief Minister Vijay was willing to offer a ministerial berth to PMK leader Anbumani’s wife, Soumiya, who is an MLA—claims she has described as mere rumours, while ministers have avoided clear comments.
The possibility of PMK joining has spread rapidly, but has also sparked pushback from within the alliance. VCK leaders have objected, with general secretary Thirumavalavan and minister Vanniyarasu stating that they would exit the cabinet if PMK is inducted, creating a setback to TVK’s alliance-building plans.
