New Delhi: Bhupendra Machar, father of pilot Smith Machar, said his son managed a serious problem on a Flydubai flight with “God’s blessing” and inner strength.

He said the family was initially gripped by fear like any other parents and immediately prayed. According to him, no one is truly prepared for such moments, but his son used his full capability to bring the situation under control.

Doctors have reportedly said recovery will take time. Bhupendra Machar said Smith suffered injuries to his head and hand, underwent treatment to the head, and required stitches. He added that he could not share every detail, but described the injuries as serious.

Speaking about his son’s experience, Bhupendra Machar said Smith has been flying for 17 years and has guided many pilots during that period, staying focused on flying and his duties.

Former colleague and pilot Deena Goswami, who worked with Smith during his time at SpiceJet, described him as humble and respectful. She said pilots undergo recurrent training every six months and are taught to respond quickly, but applying that training at the right moment is difficult. She also noted that cockpit emergencies are handled as a two-person team, and said Smith’s timely use of training in the Flydubai incident was commendable.
