Kolkata: Humayun Kabir, leader of the Aam Janata Unnayan party, on Friday said he is interested in working with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to speak out against what he described as oppression of minorities.

He said he plans to travel to Tamil Nadu after the by-elections and meet TVK leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay to hold discussions.

Kabir, who hails from Murshidabad district in West Bengal, was earlier associated with Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress. He was removed from the party after a controversial statement made ahead of the previous Assembly election.

Explaining his move, Kabir said his aim is to jointly oppose the BJP’s policies that he alleges are against minorities. He added that he prefers aligning with a newly formed but strong political force rather than approaching older parties.

Kabir also claimed that the Trinamool Congress is currently “directionless” and ruled out any possibility of returning to the party.
