A case has been registered at the Dharapuram police station in Tiruppur district against opposition leader Udhayanidhi, following allegations that children were used during election campaigning.
The complaint relates to campaigning for the Dharapuram constituency by-election, where major parties have been actively canvassing. During the campaign period, rival sides traded accusations over leaders addressing the Chief Minister in a disrespectful manner.
According to the allegations, Udhayanidhi, while campaigning in Dharapuram town, allegedly violated an Election Commission restriction by bringing an eight-year-old boy onto a campaign vehicle and making him speak. It is further alleged that the child was made to seek votes for the candidate and deliver remarks that were viewed as insulting to the Chief Minister.
Police said they examined the video of the incident and subsequently registered a case. An investigation is under way.
