Chennai witnessed late-night disruption after more than 100 youths allegedly took part in high-speed bike racing across areas including Kodambakkam, Nungambakkam and Kotturpuram. Residents said the loud noise and speeding two-wheelers continued past midnight, affecting sleep and safety.
Near the Valluvar Kottam signal in Nungambakkam, locals reported that over 50 bikes gathered at one point, creating an intense roar from the engines. The group was said to have moved from Valluvar Kottam towards Kodambakkam main roads.
Residents attempted to stop the riders by gathering on the roads and placing makeshift barricades, hoping to catch them and hand them over to police. However, the bikers reportedly scattered in different directions and escaped at high speed.
Amid the incidents, a fatal accident was reported in Kotturpuram. Gugan (21), a two-wheeler mechanic from R.A. Puram’s Greenways Road area, was travelling on a friend’s bike around 2.15 am on Sardar Patel Road. Near the Kotturpuram flyover close to IIT Madras, the bike allegedly hit an iron barrier, throwing him off the bridge; he died with a leg fracture and chest injuries.
Police recovered the body and sent it to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. Officials said there was no CCTV camera at the accident spot, and the Kotturpuram traffic police have registered a case and are investigating.
