India has exported its indigenously developed Akash missile system to the Central Asian nations of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, according to confirmation from the Defence Secretary.

The development comes as global demand for military equipment rises, with Indian-made defence products seeing wider acceptance overseas. India currently exports a range of defence hardware, including artillery and missiles, to more than 80 countries.

In FY2025, India’s defence exports crossed Rs 38,000 crore, marking a 62% increase compared to the previous year. The government has set a target to raise the export value to Rs 50,000 crore by 2030.

Akash and BrahMos missiles are among the key items in India’s export portfolio. Armenia was the first foreign customer for the Akash system.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Akash is a medium-range air defence missile system that integrates inputs from multiple sensors to detect and engage aerial threats. It is capable of targeting aircraft, missiles and drones up to a range of 25 km.
