External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said Russia has stood by India whenever the country faced threats to its security and territorial integrity. He made the remarks while speaking at a security conference in Munich, Germany.
Jaishankar noted that India and Russia have shared historically strong ties since the 1950s, and said that legacy has not been forgotten. He added that the relationship remained strong even during periods when there were attempts to back a military regime in India’s neighbourhood.
He said the partnership has now expanded beyond its earlier contours into a broader economic relationship. According to him, cooperation spans defence, nuclear energy and space, alongside significant trade, investment and energy exchanges.
On the Ukraine conflict, Jaishankar said India’s position is clear that the fighting must end and that dialogue and diplomacy are necessary. He said India is engaging both Russia and Ukraine, and is trying to assist on issues such as Black Sea shipping and security concerns.
