Washington: Former US President Donald Trump has again criticised the American election system, arguing that vote counting in the US takes too long and is prone to irregularities.

In a social media post, Trump claimed that in an “Indian presidential election” 125 million people voted in the first round and that results were announced within hours. He contrasted this with places such as Detroit, Philadelphia and California, saying it can take weeks to count even smaller numbers of votes in the US.

However, the post drew ridicule online as Brazil held the first round of its presidential election, with a contest between right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro and left-wing candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Netizens said Trump appeared to have described Brazil’s election while calling it India.

Users also pointed out that India does not elect its President through a direct public vote. The President is chosen through an indirect election involving members of Parliament and state legislators, prompting further criticism of Trump’s comparison.
