Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister Vijay has reported savings of Rs 187.56 crore in tur dal procurement over three months after reducing the purchase price by Rs 31 per kg for supplies meant for ration shops.
Under the Public Distribution System, cardholders receive one kilogram of tur dal every month at a subsidised price of Rs 30. After the new government took charge, officials said the procurement was done through “transparent tender procedures”, bringing the purchase price to Rs 77.89 per kg.
The government compared this with the previous DMK administration’s procurement rate of Rs 109.15 per kg, stating that the difference has resulted in significant savings to the exchequer.
For July to September this year, the state procured 60,000 tonnes of tur dal at a cost of Rs 467.34 crore. For the same period in 2025, the earlier government spent Rs 654.9 crore for tur dal of the same quantity and quality, officials said.
Officials added that if the current procurement price continues, annual savings from tur dal procurement alone could be around Rs 750 crore, noting that dal prices in domestic and international markets have not seen major changes during the period cited.
