Residents of Iluppai Thoppu village in Thanjavur district have felicitated Vanchinathan (42) for donating Rs 4 crore to improve the government higher secondary school where he studied.
As part of the first phase of the support, an auditorium with a roof has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 65 lakh. The remaining funds are planned to be used for additional classrooms and equipment needed for smart classrooms.
Retired teacher Ramalingam said the school currently has around 400 students and has been receiving help from several alumni over the years. Contributions have included a van to bring students, CCTV cameras and land for classroom construction.
He added that the latest donation aims to raise the school’s standards closer to that of private institutions. Plans are also under way to purchase a bus for rural students, build four additional classrooms and introduce smart-class facilities across all classes.
According to the teacher, sustained alumni support has helped improve infrastructure and increase student admissions at the school.
