Nurses who staged a protest in Chennai were arrested after demonstrating over a set of demands, including job regularisation and equal pay for equal work.
The arrests triggered sharp reactions from opposition leaders. They condemned the police action and questioned the government’s handling of the protest.
DMK leader M.K. Stalin was among those who criticised the government, alleging that promises made earlier were not being honoured.
The issue has added to the political heat around the nurses’ demands, with opposition parties calling for the arrests to be addressed and the grievances to be heard.
