INDIA bloc MPs staged a protest march in New Delhi on Monday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The rally began from the Parliament complex and headed towards the Election Commission of India’s office with placards.

Police stopped the march on Parliament Road, where protesters were held back by barricades. Opposition leader in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi were detained after they attempted to push past the barricades, according to reports from the spot.

Several other INDIA bloc leaders and MPs, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, were also detained and taken away in police vans. Security was tightened around Parliament and the Election Commission office.

Opposition parties said they have raised questions with the Election Commission regarding changes to voter lists. The BJP rejected the allegations and sharply criticised the march, accusing the INDIA bloc of targeting democratic institutions and trying to create unrest.
