A proposed “Mega Sports City” at Semmenchery near Chennai, estimated at Rs 261 crore, has been abruptly cancelled, with reports suggesting the project may be handed over to JSW.
The facility was planned as part of the state’s push to position Tamil Nadu as a sports hub, with international-standard infrastructure. A tender process was conducted with RPP earlier this year, a foundation stone was laid on February 18, and a contract worth Rs 205.89 crore was subsequently awarded.
However, after the change in government, the contract was reportedly terminated on August 12 without prior notice. Officials have said the project will be redesigned into a larger complex capable of hosting international competitions.
The reported shift towards JSW has raised questions in sports circles, especially as JSW Group director Parth Jindal has been appointed president of the Tamil Nadu Judo Association. Observers are seeking clarity on the need for redesign, the reasons for cancelling an already-awarded contract, and whether tender procedures remain transparent.
There is also talk within the sports fraternity about alleged industry and investment links between a minister and the JSW group. The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu is expected to provide an open explanation addressing concerns over private influence and procurement norms.
