Incident near Tirunelveli

Police in Tirunelveli have arrested two men for allegedly snatching a four-sovereign gold chain from their friend, who later died after falling into a pond while intoxicated.

Victim went missing after trip for work

The victim, Anand (38) from Sengamalanachiyarpuram in Virudhunagar district, worked at a private company. He had travelled to Thoothukudi for work on August 28 and went missing the next day.

Body recovered; CCTV led to suspects

Based on a complaint filed by Anand’s father, Muthaiya, Thalaiyuthu police traced the case and recovered Anand’s body from the Kattudaiyarkudiyiruppu pond. CCTV footage from the area showed Anand being taken on a two-wheeler by his co-workers Mahesh (43) and Mariyappan (37), both from Thachanallur.

Alleged theft after drinking and quarrel

During questioning, police said the three had consumed alcohol and an argument broke out. The two men allegedly told Anand they would put him on a bus back home, but instead took him on the two-wheeler and snatched the chain from his neck before fleeing. Police said Anand, unsteady due to intoxication, fell into the pond and died. Mahesh and Mariyappan were arrested by Thalaiyuthu police.
