A government welfare programme for pregnant women in Tiruchirappalli witnessed an unexpected dispute on Sunday over the ceremonial lamp-lighting sequence.

The event, organised by the Social Welfare Department as part of a community “valaikappu” (baby shower) programme, began with Minister Ramesh lighting the lamp. After MLAs Kathiravan and Vignesh lit it, the candle was handed to Congress MP Christopher Tilak.

At that point, TVK MLA Viji objected, questioning why the MP was being invited without calling him. During the exchange, the candle was passed to Viji, but it slipped and fell after brushing his hand.

Minister Ramesh intervened, calmed the situation and asked Viji to proceed with lighting the lamp. Christopher Tilak attended the function without lighting it.

Later, another argument reportedly broke out between MLA Kathiravan and MLA Viji while photographs were being taken, adding to the tension at the programme.
