An Omani co-pilot of Flydubai could face the death penalty in the United Arab Emirates after being arrested over an alleged attempt to hijack a passenger flight and crash it at an airport, according to UAE sources.

The incident involved a Flydubai aircraft that flew from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Reports say the co-pilot tried to seize control, but the plan was thwarted by the Indian pilot, Smidt Machar, who resisted despite being assaulted.

The accused, identified as Hamam Al Hammami, is currently under interrogation in the UAE. Investigators have concluded that the act he attempted amounts to a terrorist conspiracy, the report said.

Questioning has also revealed that Al Hammami had earlier studied airlines operating services to Israel and had travelled to the country a few months ago. UAE sources indicated prosecutors are expected to argue for the strictest punishment in court.

Saudi and Omani authorities are also set to continue questioning Al Hammami. The investigation is taking place amid questions over how the accused was cleared to operate flights to Israel.
