A video of a woman running a 1,600-metre race barefoot while wearing a sari during a home guard recruitment fitness test has gone viral on social media.
The runner has been identified as Kavita Kumari from Ramgarh district in Jharkhand. She is a widow and, with no steady source of income, has been shouldering the responsibility of supporting her two children and her elderly in-laws.
After learning that home guard recruitment was underway, Kavita applied and appeared for the physical efficiency test. Without a track suit or running shoes, she took part in the 1,600-metre run barefoot.
According to the report, candidates needed to complete the distance within 10 minutes. Kavita finished it in just six minutes, prompting many online users to praise her determination.
Kavita has said her desire to secure her children’s future by joining the home guard force is what pushed her to run so fast. Netizens have described it as “a mother’s run for her children.”
