Allegations have surfaced that river sand was mined at levels far beyond permitted limits during the previous DMK regime. The claims say extraction was allegedly 10 to 30 times higher than what was authorised.
The alleged excess mining is said to have resulted in a scam running into several thousand crore rupees. The issue has triggered renewed focus on the functioning of government-run sand quarries.
Following the allegations, inspections were carried out across 28 government river sand quarries in Tamil Nadu. The exercise aimed to assess the extent of sand extraction and related records.
The developments have raised the prospect of further action by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), with the report indicating potential trouble for key DMK leaders.
