A quirky contest organised by a mattress company in Japan has gone viral online, after participants were asked to do something many struggle with: fall asleep fast.

The rules were simple but strict. Contestants had to lie on the company’s mattresses and drift off quickly — and the sleep had to be deep, not just a performance.

To prevent cheating, organisers reportedly fitted each participant with a device on the head to monitor and detect sleep, making it difficult to pretend.

While the event was also seen as a promotional activity, the company said it aimed to highlight the importance of good sleep, noting that many Japanese people suffer from lack of rest.

The winner, a woman named Suyumi, received the top prize of ₹12 lakh. She was quoted as saying she would use the money to buy a mattress “like a princess’s.”
