Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has said he “firmly supports” implementing prohibition in Tamil Nadu, arguing that alcohol addiction is driving severe social harm.
Referring to a recent incident in Sivagiri in Tenkasi district, he noted reports that a woman, distressed after being assaulted by her husband in public during a temple festival, allegedly set her two children on fire after pouring kerosene on them, and later died by suicide.
Vembu said that during a morning walk he met another woman and her two children facing similar suffering due to an alcohol-dependent husband. He claimed that in rural areas, alcohol is a major factor behind murders, suicides and social conflicts.
He added that alcohol ruins the lives of young people and that addicted men often push their families towards destruction. Vembu said prohibition could be implemented using modern technology, calling it a duty owed to affected women and children.
