DMK president M K Stalin has said that “modern Tamil Nadu” was built during DMK regimes, and that development landmarks standing tall in every district bear testimony to it.
In a statement, he referred to the Chennai Metro Rail project and said the Poonamallee–Porur–Vadapalani corridor, completed under the Dravidian model government, is set to be opened for public use on October 11. Stalin noted that the Chennai Metro project was initiated during the Karunanidhi-led DMK government when he served as Deputy Chief Minister.
He said he had inspected Phase 2 works on multiple occasions and that the state government made efforts to open the Poonamallee–Porur–Vadapalani stretch by the end of 2025. However, he attributed the delay to the Railway Board taking time to grant approval for the signalling system.
Stalin said the announcement of Assembly elections and the enforcement of the model code of conduct meant the corridor could not be opened as planned during his government’s tenure. Still, he expressed happiness and satisfaction that the long-awaited route will now be available for Chennai residents.
He added that he feels a sense of pride and “motherly” emotion seeing the Metro—described by him as a project he nurtured for years—take another step forward. Stalin also said DMK’s name is associated with major infrastructure development initiatives in Chennai and reiterated that DMK rule laid the foundation for a modern Tamil Nadu.
