Tamil Nadu Police have intensified enforcement against narcotics and illicit liquor, with the Economic Offences Wing–CID (EOW-CID) working under Additional DGP Shankar. Authorities say sustained operations are aimed at curbing trafficking, sale and storage of banned substances, including ganja.
In the first nine months of the current year, police registered 11,943 cases linked to narcotics and arrested 17,412 people. Among those arrested, 808 persons—including 32 women—were detained under the Goondas Act, officials said.
Region-wise action is also being carried out across the state. The southern police zone recorded the highest number of cases, registering 2,769 during the period.
Speaking on the enforcement drive, Additional DGP Shankar said the number of cases has risen by 2,730 compared with the same period last year up to September, and arrests have also increased.
Separately, the Drugs Control Department has flagged the misuse of pain-relief and stress-relief tablets as intoxicants. In a circular, Joint Director Gurubharathi instructed district officials to conduct continuous inspections of retail and wholesale pharmacies to ensure medicines are sold only against doctors’ prescriptions, records and stock are properly maintained, and to take strict legal action with police support if large-scale diversion or illegal distribution is detected.
