By-election results from the Dharapuram and Madurantakam Assembly constituencies are being interpreted as a public endorsement of the TVK-led alliance government, which has been in office for about four months.

TVK had not secured a majority in the Assembly election. Subsequently, six AIADMK MLAs resigned and joined the party, and by-elections were held only in Dharapuram and Madurantakam.

Both the DMK and AIADMK mounted aggressive campaigns in these seats, treating the contests as crucial. Opposition parties also attempted to project the law-and-order situation under the TVK administration as deteriorating.

However, the outcome suggests voters did not give weight to the opposition’s messaging and that there was no significant public dissatisfaction with the functioning of the coalition government led by Vijay.

The results also indicate that voters were not swayed by criticism over the resignations of AIADMK MLAs and their subsequent re-nomination as candidates, nor by negative narratives circulated on social media around the issue.
