Kerala Police is preparing to introduce AI-powered humanoid robots to regulate traffic at congested junctions in Kochi, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in India. The move is aimed at strengthening public safety operations while addressing manpower constraints.

The plan envisions robots assisting with traffic management without fatigue, even in harsh weather and long duty hours. Officials say the technology could reduce the physical strain faced by traffic personnel during extended deployments.

The announcement was made during a cyber security conference held in Kochi, where Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala formally outlined the initiative. Kerala Police has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kochi-based startup I Hub Robotics to roll out the pilot.

Alongside humanoid robots, a six-wheeled armoured unmanned ground vehicle is planned for disaster management, emergency rescue, patrolling and crowd control. The company operates from Edappally and has manufacturing facilities in Kalamassery, with initial trials expected to begin soon.

Kerala Police is also set to further strengthen its cyber security centre, Cyberdome, to respond to growing cyber threats. Reports indicate that AI tools such as “AI Track” to identify accident-prone areas and “Cyber Wall” to protect the public from online fraud are also expected to be introduced.
