Mumbai: Maharashtra Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Munde on Saturday announced that the state will soon roll out an ‘Eat Right’ people’s movement to strengthen public awareness on food safety.
Speaking at an event in Mumbai, Munde said food safety should not be seen only as a government regulation, but as a lifestyle issue that requires informed choices by individuals. The proposed campaign aims to encourage healthier eating habits and help citizens understand what to eat, how to eat and how much to eat.
He said the initiative will include digital awareness drives across multiple settings such as schools, public spaces and places of worship. The outreach will focus on practical guidance so that people can make safer food decisions in everyday life.
Munde also highlighted risks inside households, noting that improper storage and separation of items even in refrigerators can lead to contamination. He said detailed awareness programmes on correct food handling will be carried out over the next few months.
Calling for public participation, he urged citizens to raise their voice against wrongdoing and question the quality of food served in restaurants and shops. He added that food safety is not only the responsibility of officials, and reiterated that he is focused on his government role and on strengthening administrative systems.
