Retired Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju has posted a sharp message on Facebook, arguing that advice should be offered only to those who are willing to accept it.
Katju said a Facebook user asked whether he would go to Jantar Mantar that day. When he replied that he had not received any invitation, the user reportedly urged him to go anyway and advise youngsters on what they should do.
In response, Katju said he quoted a Hindi song to make his point: advice must be given only when it is wanted. He also referred to a fable about a weaverbird that, after giving unsolicited advice to a monkey during rain, ended up losing its nest when the angry monkey tore it down.
The moral, Katju wrote, is that one should never give advice that has not been asked for. In the same post, he criticised protestors from the “Karappan party”, comparing them to monkeys.
