New Delhi: Parties of the INDIA alliance have continued protests in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with student groups and other organisations also joining demonstrations, creating a tense atmosphere in the capital.
Congress leaders had indicated they would march towards the Supreme Court and submit a petition to Chief Justice Suryakant. However, the Chief Justice declined to meet them, later stating at an event marking the National Human Rights Commission’s 33rd anniversary that he had received their request and had already explained why a meeting was not possible.
Congress subsequently released the Chief Justice’s written response addressed to Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. In the letter, he noted that the request sought a meeting between 4 pm and 5 pm to raise issues including the Election Commission, alleged arrests of students, closure of metro stations and cancellation of trains.
The Chief Justice said these matters are already before the Supreme Court, and that meeting to discuss pending cases would be inappropriate and contrary to judicial propriety. He added that the Supreme Court has no administrative authority to address such issues outside constitutional limits, and advised the leaders to seek judicial remedies by filing petitions, noting that some related cases are listed for hearing on Tuesday and can be filed in person or electronically for expeditious consideration under law.
