The Madras High Court on Monday questioned a legal argument raised by former School Education Minister Mahesh in a case linked to alleged bribery for granting recognition to private schools during the DMK regime.
The case stems from complaints that over Rs 100 crore was taken as bribes for issuing approvals to private schools. In connection with the allegations, private schools association president Arasakumar and former DMK MLA Muthukumaran were arrested.
Investigators later indicated that Mahesh was also connected to the case. Central Crime Branch police conducted searches at his residence and office and questioned him as part of the probe.
Mahesh approached the Madras High Court seeking to quash the case. During the hearing, his counsel argued that a case could not be registered against him without the Governor’s sanction.
Justice Lakshmi Narayanan, responding to the submission, asked why the DMK was now invoking the Governor’s authority, referring to the party’s earlier criticism of the post. The court adjourned the matter to the 29th.
