New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Sunday issued directions after metro and other transport services in Delhi were temporarily halted a day earlier.
The court said the Delhi Metro and other rail services should operate as usual, and that transport should not be shut down unless there is a law-and-order situation. It also directed that people be allowed to move within the city without obstruction, subject to traffic rules.
On road restrictions, the court asked police officials to re-examine the need for barricades put up for law-and-order reasons and remove those that are unnecessary.
The bench further said internet services must continue without disruption in accordance with legal provisions. It added that peaceful protests should be permitted in areas where prohibitory orders under BNSS Section 163 are not in force, and that protests must not incite violence.
The court noted that petitions related to detentions and large-scale preventive custody will be heard on Monday. It also said no one should be kept in preventive detention unlawfully, lawyers should not be obstructed from performing professional duties, and directed the Union government to file an affidavit with a map showing which metro stations were closed when restrictions were at their peak.
