By-elections held on October 6 for the vacant Tarapuram and Maduranthakam Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu have ended in victories for the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The contests saw a five-corner fight involving TVK, DMK, AIADMK, Naam Tamilar Katchi and Communist parties.

The results are being seen as a morale boost for the TVK government led by Chief Minister Vijay, as this was the party’s first bypoll test after assuming office. With both seats going to the ruling party, its strength in the Assembly has also increased.

In Maduranthakam, TVK candidate Maragatham Kumaravel won with 74,048 votes, while in Tarapuram, Sathyabama secured victory with 66,841 votes. The outcome is being interpreted by supporters as public backing for Vijay’s political approach and the government’s administrative steps, including anti-corruption measures.

Campaign attacks by DMK and AIADMK leaders—ranging from allegations of street-by-street canvassing driven by fear of defeat to claims of money-for-votes and criticism of defections—did not appear to resonate with voters, the results suggest. AIADMK, which had won both seats in the April general election, slipped to third place this time, while DMK finished second in both constituencies.

Beyond Tamil Nadu, the bypoll in Puducherry’s Thattanchavadi saw N.R. Congress (part of the BJP-led alliance) candidate Ashok Anand win. In West Bengal, the ruling BJP won the Nandigram and Rejikanj Assembly by-elections by large margins, and in Assam, the BJP also won the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election—adding to an overall pattern of ruling parties gaining from the latest bypolls.
