Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the world would benefit from India’s success, addressing the Bloomberg Global Economic Forum held in New Delhi.
He said the current decade has brought unprecedented global challenges, pointing to the recent pandemic and conflicts in different regions. Modi noted that factors that once connected the world—such as supply chains, energy, critical minerals, payments and technology—are increasingly being used as tools of pressure and dominance, raising concerns about reliable access to supplies when needed.
Against this backdrop, he said India is approaching global issues with a different mindset. Referring to commitments under the Paris Agreement, Modi said India set a 2015 target to reach 40% of its power generation capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030, and achieved the milestone in November 2021—nine years ahead of schedule—becoming the first G20 country to do so.
Modi also referred to an AI summit held in India, which he said Bloomberg had appreciated, noting that discussions included using artificial intelligence for humanity and how animals could also benefit. He said the government’s role should be to empower citizens rather than make them dependent, and claimed that over the past decade India has lifted 250 million people out of poverty.
Highlighting India’s democratic and digital scale, Modi said the country has over 100 languages, 80,000 registered newspapers and publications, and more than 1,000 satellite TV channels. He added that India has over 500 million YouTube users and over 500 million Instagram users in the social media era.
