Washington: As the United States heads into the Nov. 3 midterm elections, billionaire Elon Musk has donated $276 million—around Rs 2,641.5 crore—to support the Republican Party.
The elections will decide control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, with Republicans facing a tough fight to retain their majority. The report said Musk has contributed more than $276 million since July, making it one of the largest donations by an individual in the current election cycle.
A major share of the money—$158 million (about Rs 1,512 crore)—was routed directly to the Senate Leadership Fund, a key Senate election funding group. Musk has also spent millions through his own political action committee, “America PAC,” and on campaign groups backing other Republican candidates.
Democratic Party leaders have criticised the move, arguing that such large-scale financial backing undermines democratic processes and highlights the growing influence of ultra-wealthy donors in US politics. The issue has sparked wider debate internationally as well.
