The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has begun search operations in Erode and Tiruppur districts following intelligence that associates of Pakistan-based terrorist Shahzad Bhatti are hiding in the region.
Investigators say Bhatti, who was earlier involved in narcotics smuggling, later turned to terrorism and formed a group referred to as the SPN network. The agency suspects the network has been attempting to radicalise Indian youth and prepare them for terror activities.
The probe led to the arrest of 21-year-old Maqsood Ali from Uttar Pradesh, who was allegedly linked to the SPN network and was found hiding in Thanjavur. He was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, according to the NIA.
Subsequently, six more people, including 45-year-old Yasar Abdul, were arrested in Thanjavur. Based on information provided by those held, the NIA has intensified efforts to trace additional associates believed to be in Erode and Tiruppur.
Officials said the group was allegedly planning conspiratorial acts in Tamil Nadu, targeting places of worship and defence establishments. They also claimed the suspects were preparing attacks by transporting gas cylinders in a car and ramming police stations.
