Chennai: The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has permitted devotees to carry mobile phones inside temples in Tamil Nadu, provided the devices remain switched off while they are on the premises.
The move follows a complete ban that came into force on September 1, 2026, in 52 major temples across the state. Devotees had reported difficulties in contacting family members during long queues and in handling urgent needs.
Citing repeated public requests, the department has now relaxed the restriction to allow phones to be brought in, with the condition that they must be kept powered off throughout the temple visit.
However, the department said the existing prohibition on taking photos or videos of idols and rituals, as well as selfies and social media posts inside temples, will continue. It warned of strict action against those who violate the rules.
